This is my score for the horror movie, Dollhouse, which was created by Fullsail's film department. For this score, I was fairly inspired by scores from movies like Annihilation, The Lighthouse, Hereditary, Under The Skin and etc. These scores rely on a lot of tension through sound designs and synths, with a blend of orchestral instruments like strings and horns. I wanted to create a score that is similar to those of Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, Bobby Krlic, Ben Frost and etc. 

 

One of the challenges of this project, with this being one of my few first experiences with scoring, is the timing of the score along with the film. Parts of my score would feel a bit off when paired with what the scene was conveying. Many tempo changes was also applied as well, which makes some of the editing process extremely tedious when something needs to be changed. A lesson was learned from this, and that lesson was to better organize and plan out my score, so that the workflow does not get cluttered.

One of the things that I am proud of when working on this project is the sound design and post processing of synths. Creating sounds through layers of effects is my strongest suit in music production. I made my strings sound more unsettling and formant shifting them and blending them together. There were still elements of a familiar instrument yet it was also alien, which was the feeling that I wanted to convey. Some of the percussions and sound effects also took a lot of time and thinking, and it was executed perfect to my taste.
